Chelsea: Kate Upton and YouTube Stars (Review)

Chelsea Handler

Episode 44 of Chelsea “We Have Influencers Here” was an interesting look at YouTubers, social media and  an entrepreneur worth millions. The guest list included Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and actress Kate Upton, Smosh (Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla), Flula Borg,  Mamrie Hart and Sophia Amoruso.

Chelsea did two  pre-recorded segments. One  with her 82 year old gal pal Miss Cecile and the other with Eric Andre. In the former video Miss Cecile talks sex and getting one’s fallopian tubes nice and greasy.  Not for the squeamish this one. Unless you like hearing your grandma talk about sex…

The second may not be quite as nauseating but as it is Andre, you can be sure it will come close.  Not a fan of this chap. He is too much like that attention starved kid in the second grade who would eat snot to get noticed by the teacher and his classmates. This type of behavior is not comedy, it is acting outlandishly, and being very rude, to get attention.

He and Chelsea do a Jack-in-the-box unboxing (unwrapping). Chelsea plays his “straight man” and it pokes fun at the ever popular “unboxing” videos on YouTube. Here is the video and if you are a fan of Andre enjoy. If you are not, give it a miss, unless you like fast-food.

Upton was the first guest and while she is not a YouTube sensation, it was an upload to the sharing application that helped to kickstart her career. There may be quite a few who have not seen the delightful young lady do the “Dougie” but far more would have seen her “Cat Daddy” dance where she wore considerably less.

After speaking with Kate, the show moved onto Miss Cecile’s After Party. (Note: This is not a channel on YouTube. We know as we looked…) The less said of this segment the better. Only interesting in a cringeworthy sort of way.

Next up were the proper YouTube stars. Smosh, who have their first “live” show on Friday, 26 August. These two have well over 22 million subscribers and are the top of the YouTube food chain.

Mamrie Hart was the second YouTube celeb with over a million subscribers and last on the list was Flula with over 700 thousand subscribers. Out of the three, Hart has a film coming out, starring other YouTube personalities.

It was interesting to see Smosh, at the very top, with even more subscribers than nigahiga (Ryan Higa) – who not that long ago had the most subscribers on YouTube…in the world – talk about the days of the “tube” before Google bought it. They actually got their start before the Internet giant bought the platform in November, 2006.

If you take the time to look at IMDb and see the cast list on Hart’s film Dirty 30 there are a number of YouTubers in the film. One, Grace Helbig was in Smosh’s 2015 film, Smosh: The Movie.

Flula appears to be some sort of Zach Galifinakas Between Two Ferns and Sacha Baron Cohan knock off. Plants and Borat combined with points off for lack of originality.

Last up was multimillion entrepreneur Sophia Amoruso whose company Nasty Gal was started by selling a stolen book on eBay. Not exactly the most inspiring of stories…

Who knew that hard work and thievery could be so lucrative?

The college dropout and “dumpster diver” moved on from selling stolen items to clothing and amassed a $280 million fortune. She how has a photo book, aka coffee table book for sale and has stepped down as CEO of Nasty Gal.

Amoruso did write a “real” book which has been turned into a production on Netflix starring Brit Robertson.

Chelsea ended the show with her “Brought To You By” segment. In this case it was the demise of Gawker, the site that showed the world Hulk Hogan’s sexual congress with a pal’s wife. The funniest bit of the episode epilogue was Chelsea’ rant about overusing hashtags. It was hysterical.

Rather interestingly, there was a lesson to be learned from this social media episode. To make a living from YouTube you need over 22 million subscribers. To have it bolster your career, dance the Cat Daddy in a string bikini…

Chelsea is on three days a week on Netflix.

Chelsea: Natasha Lyonne, Marc Maron and Nathan Adrian – Cats (Review)

Chelsea Handler Netflix

This episode of Chelsea was brilliantly funny. All because of the tension between Ms. Handler and her second guest Marc Maron.   Chelsea’s guests included Natasha Lyonne, who is just brilliant on Orange Is the New Black as Nicky Nichols, Maron and Olympic Gold and Bronze medalist Nathan Adrian.

Lyonne was the first guest and her most recent films were very briefly discussed, Antibirth and The Intervention, Natasha was great quirky fun. The interview was rambling and disjointed and very funny.  A clip from Lyonne’s gal pal Aubry Plaza was shown where she did a pretty decent impression of Natasha.

The OITNB actress then made a joke about having sex with Aubrey, which they did in a film together (Addicted to Fresno: 2015). Lyonne hit a blank spot at one point and Chelsea then introduced Marc Maron, stand up comic and host of WTF.

Maron’s podcast, often recorded in his garage, is wildly popular and he even interviewed President Obama from the garage.  When Chelsea appeared on his podcast, the two did not get along. She mentioned his two cats and the interview went downhill from there.

(During the podcast, apparently, Maron lost his composure and became aggressive, much to the surprise of the social media world.)

The subject of the cats came up again and Natasha launched into peals of delighted laughter when Marc complained that people see him as some sort of “freakish cat person.”

Clearly the antagonism between Chelsea and Maron is still there. When he mentions the the cat person label, Handler pounces.  “For you to get this hostile is f*cking weird…”

Finally they moved on past the cat issue and Chelsea’s previous appearance on Marc’s podcast to talk about the Barrack Obama interview.  Maron talks about the surreal experience of having the president of the United States showing up at the garage. Snipers on the roof, the Secret Service and so on.

Chelsea actually gave Maron a nice plug for his presidential interview. Despite the tension between Marc and Chelsea, he gave great interview. Funny, witty and an even match for Chelsea. Maron will also performing at Carnegie Hall.

The show then went to a pre-recorded segment where Chelsea guested on Liar City, a Florida podcast hosted by Brian Flanagan. It was amusing and typically Chelsea “ran” the podcast. Professing her hatred for Arnold Schwarzenegger and her love for faux singing group Milli Vanilli.

Next up was Adrian who spoke about the Olympics, Michael Phelps and what sleeping at the Olympic Village was like.  (Twin beds with extenders.) Adrian was full of praise for Phelps and did not say too much about Ryan Lochte.

Chelsea finished by saluting the Olympic athletes who competed at Rio and specifically applauded Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui who told the world she was on her period.

This alternative talkshow on Netflix continues to entertain because of Ms. Handler’s choice of guests and her sight-seeing segments. Handler is brilliant at hoisting the drug flag. Her opening gag about CVS was very funny.

Chelsea will be back on tomorrow and Friday on Netflix. Do not miss this out of the box talkshow.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! – Hillary Clinton and John Krasinski (Recap)

 HILLARY CLINTON, JIMMY KIMMEL

Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday had presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on as the esteemed political guest and John Krasinski came on to plug his latest film, The Hollars.  Other parts of the show included a “man on the street” interview. A “reporter” asked what people thought of Hillary Clinton’s speech earlier in the day (there was no speech).  A pre-recorded segment showed Jimmy running for vice president with Matt Damon denigrating Kimmel.

Jimmy came out and did his monologue, focussing on Clinton, the upcoming debates and poking fun at  Trump.  (He also managed to have a jab at Trump supporter Gary Busey.) He touched base with the Olympics and mercilessly made fun of national disgrace Ryan Lochte. The show then did the Clinton “man on the street” gag.

Hillary Clinton gave great interview. For a candidate who has been accused of not having a sense of humor, she was very amusing.  Jimmy asked her about Donald Trump and the upcoming debate.

Clinton’s health was also brought up and the host had her prove just how healthy she really is:

After the pickle test they spoke of balloons and former President Bill Clinton. They also talked about Jimmy being vice-vice president:

Jimmy’s next guest was John Krasinski. All the men out there are allowed to hate Krasinski just a little as he is married to Emily Blunt (Sicario, Edge of Tomorrow). John opened his interview by saying he cooked the Sunday roast.

It was chicken and it was not a “one-off” as he lost a bet with Emily and now has to cook the Sunday meals for awhile.

There was a clip from Krasicki’s new film:

By the end of the episode, Ms Clinton came across very well and was very amusing in her responses to Jimmy. So much for the possible first female president having no sense of humor.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs late night on ABC. Watch this one, he is very funny and his shows are clever and original. He may even have time for Matt Damon on one of his shows.

Chelsea: Let’s Go On My Tinder – Survival and Millennial Sex (Review)

Chelsea Handler on Netflix

Chelsea’s guests wereJoel Kinnaman (Suicide Squad and Edge of Winter), Sean Rad (CEO of Tinder and fellow talkshow host Eric André. Chelsea opened the show talking about how Millennials have less sex than any generation ever.  Later she and Fortune Feimster, along with Dan, her assistant, went to a survival school run by Dan Baird.

One audience member stated that he had not had sex in years. Chelsea guessed that he could well be asexual. She also mentioned the gay men “have a thing” against “full penetration.” “I don’t blame you,” she said.

Kinnaman was the first guest and spoke many about “inadvertently” smuggling opium into Malaysia when he was younger. The conversation was mostly about drugs and the harsh penalties for smuggling them in Asia. The actor did give a small plug for his newest film, Edge of Winter.  He also talked very briefly about working out and maintaining his physique; Mexican supplements.

Next up was Chelsea, Fortune and Dan’s experience in Survival School. It clearly did not impress the host or her friends.  Baird showed them how to make a fire, what wild food to eat, how to make a small shelter and, incredibly, camouflage.

Dan clearly becomes hypothermic and Baird is clearly not concerned. Chelsea is not the least impressed. It is obvious that she has not connection with the other Dan. At one point he goes to shake her hand and Chelsea ignores his outstretched hand.

(During this pre-recoded segment, Chelsea gets the funniest line of the episode. Baird holds up some wild oats.  Handler mentions gluten, which Baird “poo-poos.”  She retorts that  if you have a severe allergy it matters.

“A lot of people in California  have been tricked into believing  they do [have an allergy to gluten].”  Very funny and typical Chelsea.

Next up was Sean Rad who gave some great tips for those who use Tinder. He helped Chelsea set up her profile.  Rad’s biggest tip? Be yourself. Which is, perhaps, the best advice of all.

Chelsea’s last guest was talkshow host Eric André who is definitely an acquired taste.  Has an “alternate” talk show on Adult Swim and it is odd to say the least. As is his humor.  Rad and Chelsea both found him funny although his humor is, at best, eclectic and crass.

There was some talk of sleeping with guests, Eric – two, Chelsea -two. The show finished with Chelsea giving a grammar lesson, which was,  as usual,  introduced by Kelsey Grammer.

Joel Kinnaman was a hard interview. Clearly his use of Mexican supplements has affected his Q&A skills. André came over as an attention starved kid and out of all three, Sean Rad was the most informative.

Check out his advice below:

Chelsea is on Netflix three times a week – Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Stop by and check her “outside the box” talkshow out

Chelsea: The Porn King of Japan and Ben-Hur (Review)

Chelsea Handler

Chelsea “The Porn King of Japan”  was a celebration of the male form.  All of the guests were male and featured Jack Huston (grandson of John and star of the newest version of Ben-Hur) as the first male guest.

The English actor and Chelsea spoke of the film.  They revealed that Jesus was in the movie, although they did not mention  Morgan Freeman (who played God at least once in his career) who is also in the film.

A little Roman history was trotted out for the audience and Huston spoke of the William Wyler version of Ben-Hur. He mentioned that it was rather daunting to follow the film that garnered Charlton Heston his only Oscar.

Chelsea suggested that Huston was returning to England to be the next Bond. Jack laughed this off and revealed that as far as he knew, Daniel Craig was still playing 007.

Next was a pre-recorded segment where Chelsea met with the porn king of Japan. A fascinating look at  the less savory side of the country.  Shimiken,  real name Ken Shimizu, is the number one male porn star in Japan.

Curiously, his interpreter Tony Crosbie,  was a heavy-set chap from Liverpool.  The translator got on the bad side of Chelsea when he started putting words into Shimiken’s mouth.  Chelsea asked about the industry and how a growing number of people in the country do not want to have sex.

Amazingly, in Japan there are only 70 male porn stars and 10,000 female ones, at least according to Shimiken.  The porn star gave Chelsea a t-shirt with her name on it.

Back in the Netflix studio the next two guests were  hosts from American Ninja WarriorMatt Iseman and Akbar Gbaja-Biamila.  Chelsea has known Iseman for years and the two used to share venues in stand-up. Iseman actually told a story about a masturbation gag that Handler used to do. From the long-shot on Chelsea she was not overly pleased at this trip down memory lane.

The two men managed talked about the sports competition show and how contestants differ.  They also spoke of how popular the show has become and Akbar suggested that Chelsea go on the show.   Rather interestingly, American Ninja Warrior originated as a Japanese television show. Making a nice link to the Shimiken segment.

Matt talked  of being on the celebrity version of The Apprentice and being stonewalled by Arnold Schwarzenegger after doing his Predator impression.

There were no politicians on this episode, thankfully, and it proved to be quite entertaining as a result.  Chelsea finished with another pre-recorded segment. It was a very funny sexual harassment video that she shared with her housekeeper.  (It can be seen down below.)

Episodes like “The Porn King of Japan” make this talkshow different from the rest.  Of course Chelsea hosting the show makes it different already but her eclectic choices of topics make the entire thing entertaining.

Chelsea may be an acquired taste but even those who are not familiar with her laid back style will soon become addicted to her show.  The series airs three times a week on Netflix.
