The 2024 horror film The Twin is gonna make you jump folks. I was bouncing up and down so often it began to feel like I was on a trampoline. This one has it all. Jump scares and goosebumps marching up and down your arm. That type of scary. The Twin is the scariest thing I’ve seen this year. I may have to sleep with the light on tonight.

The Twin Story

A man’s son dies in a terrible accident at home. The boy’s father tries to hang himself. After being released from an institute, he begins to see and hear things. One of the things he sees is himself.

The Main Cast

Logan Donovan is Nicholas.

Aleksa Palladino is Charlie.

Robert Longstreet is Dr Beaumont.

Shannon Cochran is Shelby.

Tripp Toupal is Jacob.

Kudos to the entire cast for selling this one. Donovan shows us the inner turmoil. Palladino emits grief and pain from every pore. Longstreet rocks as Beaumont and Tripp Toupal feels as real as your own youngster. This all goes toward making this one work so well.

Let’s Talk The Twin

The film starts with what felt like a homage to the Stephen King short story Gramma. *That story gave me goosebumps. My own great grandmother would talk in her sleep, sometime rather loudly. At 11, I was terrified to be left alone with her. King’s little story brought all that back.* It soon leaves King territory behind, but not far.

The Twin then segways into The Dark Half with a touch of The Babadook for good measure. This film is not just scary, it is tragic. A combination of heart stopping fear mixed with a gut wrenching reaction to this man’s pain. There is one other King reference in the film, another of those “Dark Tower” doors.

Director/Co-Writer J.C. Doler takes us through a journey that is, to be honest, very different. *Doler shares writing credit with Paul Petersen.* It loses a little steam towards the end.

It falls back into a more of a psychological realm than the outright creepiness at the start.

There is a lot that has been done right here. Doler does not rely upon loud noises to produce the jump scares. He knows what works without the cheap tricks used by so many.

The Verdict

The Twin is scary. There is so much on offer here. It is also about love and its many faces. Love is pain, guilt and remorse. It is also about facing your own inner demons. Due to the slight change of course towards the end, The Twin earns a solid 4 stars out of 5. It is streaming on AMC Plus right now. This is a solid watch. Go and check it out, but make sure the lights are on.
