The 1980s detective show Bergerac is coming back to british television but with a new look. So sayeth Gloucestershire Live and other news outlets on March 4, 2024. The popular show featured Midsomer Murders star John Nettles, who retired from the latter show in 2010 allowing a new inspector to solve crime in the homicide happy area.

Bergerac was a stunning success back in the day. From 1981 to 1991, the program pulled in 15 millions viewers on the BBC. It is now, apparently, going to make its comeback via a streaming platform.

Nettles played the title role, the alcoholic copper with an ex-wife and a friendly former father-in-law. The police detective was based in the holiday island Jersey. A number actors names have been bandied about as “new versions of the old.”

Fans of British television will be familiar with the three names on the metaphorical table, David Tennant, Aiden Turner and James Norton. There is a plan to start filming this summer and working in a cameo for Nettles, the original Bergerac.

Jersey politician Kristina Moore, former chief minister of the island, reported that in terms of economic growth, the show being filmed on the Channel Island would be a significant plus. Bergerac will, allegedly, receive £1.8 million via the Jersey government.

Reportedly, the green light has been lit. Scripts are ready and they could conceivably start this spring. A government spokesperson revealed that they were considering a request for funding the detective show.

The plot line, in a nutshell, was Detective Sergeant Jim Bergerac coming back to work after a series of disastrous events. Each episode focussed on Jim and his trials and tribulations.

There has been news about a Bergerac revival for some time. So while it will be difficult to picture a new DS Jim Bergerac, the news that the show could be returning soon will be exciting for fans in the UK. Expats and Americans who are fans of the original 1980s series may have to wait. Hopefully BritBox and/or Acorn TV, or whomever stream the show, will do so in other areas as well.
