The 2024 Thriller; The Intruder takes a long time “to get there,” but this sauntering pace is necessary. This is a slow buildup that few will appreciate but it all works at the end. In terms of a climax, The Intruder takes its time.
Rather interestingly, There are two films by the title of “The Intruder.” Each of them released in 2024. Both fall into the Thriller/Horror category. This film is the one without the party.
The Intruder Story
Michael is facing his first time living alone. He is stressed. More than slightly afraid and getting a little upset. It seems someone keeps coming in his house. Once his head hits the pillow, someone prowls through his place. The socially inept home owner also has a very intrusive neighbor; Joe.
The Cast
David Gow is Michael.
Steve McNair is Joe.
Monica Bell is Jenny.
Cody Robinson is Hooded Man.
Let’s Talk The Intruder
Jack Brame writes and directs this one. In this, his third film in the “big chair,” sees the new director doing well. He may be a novice, but Brame rings all the bells here.
Initially, I thought the film was another version of the South Korean film Hide and Seek; released 2013. Indeed, the subject matter does seem not too dissimilar. This is not an urban myth scenario, though. The story of Michael is interesting as a character study alone. There are no myths to be found here.
In terms of this Generation Alpha chap, he copes miserably with his dilemma. Seeking help and advice from his older neighbour Joe, the young man wallows in his own ineffectiveness. Michael is desperately struggling in this mire of fear and helplessness.
Cast is King
David Gow and Steve McNair bounce off one another very well. It is their interaction that reinforces the primary tale of Michael’s dilemma. The chemistry between the two works. Joe as the overly helpful “Dad” neighbour and Michael as the slightly nebbish kid. The two actors “nail it.”
The Verdict
The Intruder, despite getting pretty hammered by viewers, is a solid 3.5. star film. Brame ticks all the boxes here. The inclusion of “night terrors” is a perfect accent to the story. The film does run a little long, 101 minutes, so be warned. You feel every minute. The movie is streaming on Prime and Fawesome right now.
