Harley Wallen directs the 2025 low/no budget horror Final Recovery. After watching the film I can honestly say, it can’t get more final than that. A “guardian angel” at a recovery facility called Sage offers the ultimate solution to drug abuse. It’s downbeat, slow and not a little depressing.
On top of its quirky delivery and subject matter, Final Recovery was filmed in Flint, Michigan. This is irony with a capital I.
Final Recovery Story
Rodney’s drug problem sees him booked into Sage. Again. Nanny Lou a short, aggressive woman runs the place. Her saccharin sweet delivery barely hides the menace behind the facade. Similar to the old roach hotels of yore, you can check in but don’t expect to check out.
Nanny Lou’s father was murdered by a drug abuser when she was a young girl. It’s payback time.
The Cast

Charlene Tilton is Nanny Lou.
Jasper Cole is Rodney.
Richard Tyson is Dr Sam Potter.
Michael Emery is Levi.
Kaiti Wallen is Cindy Porter.
Cherish Lee is Tonya.
Damien Chinappi is Dustin.
Harley Wallen is Officer Jacob Cramer.
Heather Fairbanks is Rhonda.
Let’s Talk Final Recovery
Written by Jerry Lee Davis and Nick Theurer, this “Christmas” horror may just be the most downbeat holiday film ever. Sage, the rehab clinic is full of people who are clearly not getting better.
This is sort of like “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” but in recreational drug abuse hell. Nanny Lou is the Nurse Ratched in this tale. The manager of the facility is twisted enough that she makes Ratched look like Mary Poppins.

The writers’ world of the downtrodden abusers is pretty depressing. They seem all too unaware of what is happening. Only Rodney, and later Dustin, realize that something is rotten under the surface of Sage.
Moving at a snail’s pace, Final Recovery takes forever to reach its climax. This is necessary. We need to feel the lethargic world of the players here. We must identify with the idea that as captives in this world, time for them stands still.
This pacing makes us uncomfortable bedfellows with these doomed patients. While this seems to be the purpose behind the slow delivery, it makes for a certain amount of frustration.
Issues
There are a few issues, apart from the glacial pacing, that intrude. The fact that Nanny Lou is clearly unbalanced and dealing “special’s, aka drugs” feels unreal. Would a family, or a court, place someone under this woman’s care?
Levi, as Nanny Lou’s enforcer is also clearly off in left field. His propensity to beat the patients is so over the top that Officer Jacob’s lack of action is off putting.
It Works
Wallen manages to make the film creepy and uncomfortable. The actors stand out here. Kudos to Heather Fairbanks as Rhonda. She manages to make this woman so unpleasant that we wonder that Rodney wants to get clean. Charlene Tilton does some impressive scenery chewing here and we thoroughly believe that everyone is terrified of her.
*Michael Emery is truly disturbing as Levi. He manages to evoke the same feeling as schoolyard bullies. His portrayal of the enforcer leads one to believe his character enjoys pulling wings off flies. Kudos to Emery on a job well done.*

The Verdict
Final Recovery is a solid 3.75 stars. If offers a cast of characters that are off the wall, but desperate with it. The grindingly slow pace takes much from the film, although it does fit the setting. The film is streaming on Tubi and Plex for free right now.
