This is apparently Australian Cinema Month. The 2025 offering of Romancing Sydney is about love “down under.” It is a dancing, but not singing, romantic tale about folks falling in love. The film is fanciful, funny and quite “arty.”
Romancing Sydney Story
Lilli owns and runs an antique store. Her assistants, George and Sachin have an interesting relationship. George talks about his birds (women) Sachin dreams of romance and Lilli runs the shop with an iron fist.
Elisa is a dancer who works with Alex and Zac. This trio of hoofers meet Sachin and their lives change.
The Cast
Gabrielle Chan is Lilli.
Peter Hayes is George.
Anmol Mishra is Sachin.
Susanne Richter is Elisa.
Connor Dowling is Alex.
Brendon Wong is Zac.
The entire cast knock this out of the park. Chan is especially entertaining and Mishra is convincing as the dreamy Sachin.
Love is in the Air
Anmol Mishra is a one man band, a cottage industry. He does it all in the film, very well. This whimsical tale of love in Sydney, shows that the very air is full of romance. Six characters fall in, and out, of love.
Each person, except Lilli perhaps, is a dreamer. Sachin most of all. Although clearly, George also has his head in the clouds.
Mishra shows us that Australia is much more than “Roos,” tinnies and “tossing a few more shrimp on the barbie.” *Thanks Paul Hogan.* The writer/director zeroes in on the cultural side of things.
There is no Opera House in the outback, it is in the city of Sydney. While this icon does not figure in his film, it clearly influenced the direction of the subject. Not too dissimilar to Love Actually, this multifaceted love story is entertaining. Funny, poignant and witty, it is a project well done.
Romancing Sydney Verdict
This one is a clear winner, in terms of filming techniques and subject matter. The decision to utilize the theme of dance; contemporary, interpretive and a bit of ballroom, works. The dance scenes are, in turn, dreamy, touching and comical. *The dancing lesson sequences are a brilliant mixture of all these qualities.*
