Episode four of The Penguin is all about more backstory. We learn just how the Falcone’s used Arkham to unravel Sophia. We also find out just how cold blooded Carmine really was. There is a glimpse of what made Oz turn against Sophia and why he threw her under the metaphorical bus.

The story so far

Last week’s episode saw Sophia and Oz in deep trouble. Vic saved Oz but the penguin left his ally in the hands of Mrs. Moroni. Sophia bashes her head and calls Dr. Rush for help.

Cue her walk down memory lane.

It is an unpleasant journey.

I’m gonna Die in there

Sophia predicts that once she is placed in Arkham, “I’m gonna die in there.” In essence she does. The Falcone daughter loses the part of her life that existed before being found guilty as “The Hangman.”

Before committing the cardinal sin of speaking to the press, Sophia is tagged by her father Carmine to take over the family business. After meeting with Summer Gleeson she learns, in short order that: Her mother did not kill herself and that daddy murders women on a regular basis. She has also fallen from grace.

The last event was facilitated by Oz.

Unravelling

After another inmate attacks her, Sophia is given a chance to retaliate. She is also given regular shock treatments. For a decade there is a concerted effort to push the woman over the edge.

It works.

we always hurt the ones we love

Rush rescues Sophia. After a conversation with her former doctor, she realizes that she does need a new start. She also realizes that all her life, men have lied to her. Including her former driver. Oz had better lay low and the immediate Falcone family is about to be reduced dramatically.

Before drastically pruning the Falcone family tree, Sophia reminds them that she actually loved them.

Wrapping up

There is a new Falcone boss in charge at the show’s end. The Penguin continues to entertain and adds new twists each week. Oz may well be the main character of this series but Sophia Falcone has just become his nemesis.

The Penguin streams on Max with new episodes airing on Sundays.
