Episode two of The Penguin takes a step up in the tension stakes here. Sofia is not in Arkham any more, as Dr Russo reminds her, and she is using her madness to start calling the shots. With Oz’s help of course.

Episode two In the beginning

Oz is rebuffed by Sofia when he initially approaches her. This does not slow him down though. He moves on with brokering the deal with the Maroni family. No one trusts Cobb, not the Falcone/s or the Maroni clan.

Alberto’s death has brought the madness that Sofia works so hard to control, dangerously to the top. She may not be in Arkham “anymore,” but Sofia is still deadly.

The Heist

He orchestrates the theft of the drops and Viti, the constant thorn in his side, throws a spanner in the works. As a result, Oz does what he does best, he improvises. Despite Vitti messing up his plans, Oz wins.

There is a pretty intense firefight and while the penguin is in the wrong vehicle, he “dances” his way clear.

After the theft and wholesale slaughter of Falcones, Sofia believes there is a rat in the organization. She takes positive steps to find out who. The female Falcone fresh from Arkham is tired of being frozen out by Johnny Vitti and Luka.

She wants revenge.

The funeral and beyond

Sofia goes through an almost calculated melt down at “berto’s” funeral. This display does little to alleviate her bad reputation as the scary serial killer of the family.

She finds an old cop on her family’s payroll and squeezes him. He offers up a survivor from the heist. Oz takes care of him and keeps on wooing Sofia with offers of help.

DAncing

While the shadow of Arkham looms over Sofia now more than ever, Oz dances. He keeps moving the various pieces and along the way he teaches Vic more about working the play.

Oz’s mum wanders out of the house. Her dementia is marching along and she has no idea what day it is. Cobb, who loves his mother, dances with her. For a man with a dodgy foot, in a brace, he is enamoured of fancy footwork. He sees himself as a dancer.

At the end of the episode, after Sofia lightens up, he says, “Let’s dance.”

Episode two cast

Clancy Brown is Salvatore Maroni.

Cristin Milioti is Sofia Falcone.

Colin Farrell is Oz Cobb.

Rhenzy Feliz is Victor Aguilar.

Deirdre O’Connell is Francis Cobb.

Shohreh Aghdashloo is Nadia Maroni.

Michael Kelly is Johnny Vitti.

Wrapping Up

Oz will not stop till he gets Viti now. Calling him penguin was a clear insult. Vic screws up and he is taught a lesson. These moments, when Oz has to take his new protege to task, show his more human side. He does not like being cruel to his new driver.

This touch, like his devotion to his mother, makes the penguin feel more human. He is no less dangerous but he shows a certain deepness. Oz has layers.

He also likes to dance.

The Penguin streams on Max. New episode air on Sunday after 9.
