Seriously?

Okay. So I don’t want to be “that guy.” The one who pooh-poohs the idea of remakes full stop, but Time Bandits (2024) what the heck? Who on earth thought this was a good idea?

*Answers in the comment section below. Seriously. I want to put a face to this idea.*

Outrage aside

We know that Taika Waititi is going to direct one episode. So far so impressed. I have adored this man’s work since Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

However.

He is directing one episode. Most likely the first one. The one that will grab the public’s attention.

Giving benefit of the doubt, this could be good. Spreading the tale out over several episodes might make the difference.

Maybe.

There is, however, a huge gap here.

Where’s Sean?

Movie Was A Bizarre Time Travel Caper

Connery completed the original film. He was the final piece in the puzzle, his presence made Time Bandits (1981) work. Sean’s presence gave the film a sort of comedic gravitas.

The Terry Gilliam film was eccentric, odd and quirky.

It was also almost ingenious. Who else could have played “The Supreme Being” but Sir Ralph Richardson?

Cup of tea old boy

Time Bandits, the original was also incredibly English, or British if you prefer. Connery being Scottish means the latter rather than the former. Sure Shelley Duvall is American but everyone else, including all the bandits were British.

The trailer above features Lisa Kudrow. I love what this actor brings to any role she plays. But. Kudrow is as American as apple pie. Sure Duvall is a fellow American, but she cameoed in the original Time Bandits. Kudrow has a leading role.

This will, I’m afraid, completely change the tone of the film. Without the very cultural things that made the first one work so well, this could feel, well, contrived.

It’s a matter of time

Yes, this was an intended pun. However, it really is a matter of time. Time Bandits 2024 premieres on Apple TV + on July 24. I am hopeful that this version of Terry Gilliam’s classic, nay, iconic comedy will entertain.

Until then, watch this 1981 trailer. Just for memories sake.
