Netflix Sued by Real Baby Reindeer Stalker: $170 Million

Netflix is being sued by the real Baby Reindeer stalker for an estimated $170 million for defamation; as reported by Bloomberg News. Fiona Harvey is, apparently, beyond being upset at all the unnecessary attention that she brought on to herself.

The story

A stand up comic, Richard Gadd, wrote the Baby Reindeer screenplay. He tells of a difficult time in his life. It is a tale of sexual abuse and stalking. The stalker in the film who called Gadd “Baby Reindeer” was Martha Scott, played brilliantly by Jessica Gunning, was a disturbing character.

Gadd is not shy showing his lifestyle and personal issues. The stand up comic was having issues before he met Martha/Fiona.

Baby Reindeer, per Deadline, has amassed around 60 million views. This was in May and has probably surpassed that estimate. As witness by the May figures alone, Netflix has a “hit” on their hands.

Ms Harvey alleges that Gadd falsified the facts and exaggerated the event. She claims that Netflix did not exercise due diligence on the screenplay presented by the comic.

She also claims that the movie has invaded her privacy and is drawing undue attention to her life. While accusing Netflix and Baby Reindeer of putting her in the headlights, she is openly, via media, added more fuel to the existing “fire.”

Spot on Casting

In terms of Netflix not double checking facts, as accused, the movie was spot on with the casting of Jennifer Gunning (The Outlaws, Pride) as the stalker. Gunning even resembles the “outraged” Harvey in Baby Reindeer. Apparently the actress and the screenplay made the public zoom in on the real stalker. We wonder if her media blitz is more for her own gain versus her wounded ego.

all Rise for the Judge

The case will be tried in California. Netflix has stated that they will be defending themselves vigorously. Harvey is suing for defamation and emotional distress and gross negligence.

Netflix with their “This is a true story” opening may have to change their approach if Harvey wins. In the meantime, Baby Reindeer is still available to watch on Netflix. Stay tuned for more drama from the “real” stalker.
