Blindspot: Older Cutthroat Canyon begins with Reade stopped in his pursuit of the Carter and Jane Doe investigation. A man in a balaclava takes the agent’s gun and threatens Weller’s sister and son, both of whom Reade cares about. Later, he tells Mayfair that the lead he was followed was nonexistent.
Weller and his team learn of a painting stolen that is the exact match to a tattoo on Jane’s body; a burning rose. They go to investigate at the gallery meeting Kristy (Grace Rex) the assistant to the artist ZOMO. Jane leaves for a moment and while she is gone the rest of the team go over the crime scene.
Kurt realizes that the area has been booby-trapped and as the team turn to leave, the bomb goes off injuring Weller. The FBI track down ZOMO’s apartment and find the man tied up and bleeding out in a chair in the middle of the room. Jane and Reade enter the apartment and Jane is shot by a sniper across the street.
The team learn that the bomb was not meant for the FBI or Weller but for Jane. She questions her handler and learns of a man named Cade who wants to kill her. Both the FBI, led by Weller who checks himself out of hospital early, and Jane try to track down Cade separately to stop him.
Kristy is found at the airport trying to leave the country and Weller works out that she is ZOMO. The man who died in the apartment where Jane was shot, says Kristy, was her boyfriend.
Mayfair pushes for Weller to go back into the hospital. The body count rises as one of Jane’s “outside” team falls prey to Cade’s gun. The man, whom Jane recognizes from another flashback, sets up Jane and her handler with transport and weapons to go after Cade.
As the man opens the garage door to let them out, Cade shoots the man. Jane returns fire and wounds her stubborn would-be assassin. Patterson works out where the killer may be.
Jane’s handler wants her to leave the FBI and hide. Typically, she refuses. Weller and the team head to the Red Hook power company where Patterson worked out the assassin might be. They discover a ship and the killer.
Cade is patching himself up, removing the bullet that Jane put in him, when Weller, Zapata and Reade find him. They trip an alarm and the man leads them into a trap. Kurt’s wound is bleeding and he tries to work out a plan of escape.
Jane’s handler gets a message about the team being trapped and she goes to help her team. Once there, Cade gets the drop on Jane and the two fight. Kurt has worked out a “MacGyver” solution to the problem and the three FBI agents get out of the room.
As Cade and Jane fight, her handler arrives and shoots the assassin in the stomach. As Weller and the rest of team approach, the man grabs Cade and takes him over the edge of the ship.
Mayfair is furious that Jane broke off on her own and tells her if it happens again, she is out of the FBI. Weller is also angry with Jane for endangering herself. Kurt goes home and Reade arrives after Weller’s sister puts on a new bandage.
Afraid for Sarah (Jordana Spiro) and her son’s safety, Reade (Rob Brown) breaks it off with Kurt’s sister and leaves the apartment. Jane thinks that Cade’s issues with her are more personal than ideological and before the closing credits roll, the assassin steals a car.
Cade is still alive.
Blindspot really mixed it up in this episode putting Jaimie Alexander’s character through the mill in terms of loyalty. Her flashbacks this week entailed laughing and touching versus the usual ones of death and violence. Whether she likes it or not, she is beginning to feel ties to both the FBI and her former organization.
Sullivan Stapleton’s character may have moved himself away from Jane “romantically” but it is clear that he still carries a torch for the woman who may really be Taylor Shaw. With Cade still alive, it is certain that Jane’s life is still in danger and Reade made the right choice in distancing himself from Sarah and Sawyer.
Blindspot airs Mondays on NBC.
