I’m on my way to see my daughter and her boyfriend. I’m sitting in the first class carriage of the train and using their internet, free, worth the extra price of the ticket, in my humble opinion. But I am quietly seething while I attempt to write this blog post on a train that is rocking more than Elvis Presley at his peak. It seems that the smoking nazis have decided to attack electric cigarettes now.
That’s right, British Rail have joined the Nazi move to ban electric cigarettes from their precious platforms and on their trains. Never mind that these battery operated ciggies do not emit toxic fumes (only harmless vapour) and are not lit (there is no fire here guys and gals of the British Transport service) no harm to anyone at all.
Yet, in their infinite wisdom, they’ve decided to ban the inoffensive item from their areas.
If I wasn’t so damned busy, I would have raised a real stink – versus the non-smelling electric discharge from my electric fag. But I took the easy route and put the bloody thing back in my pocket.
But they aren’t alone in their dislike of this new “safer” mode of smoking. On my way back from South Africa recently, the air steward and the captain of the aircraft announced over the loud speaker that electric cigarettes were not allowed on any Air France flights.
For the love of God, why not. The “smoke” that is emitted from fake fags is not toxic. It is not even smoke. Has society become so anally retentive that just the appearance of a little white stick that emits vapour causes the same revulsion as the real thing? Or are they bothered that the sight of someone contentedly puffing away on their battery operated smoke machine might induce a smoker to light a real cigarette?
I didn’t like the new attitude of non-smokers when the whole “social pariah” thing got smoking banned practically everywhere. If anything it made me all the more determined to keep puffing away on the real deal. But after almost dying last year, I’ve given the “coffin nails” up. Not because society demands that I do, but because I wanted to.
I have an aversion to bullies of any type, even the ones who are trying to force me to do something for my own good. My reaction has always been to stubbornly dig my heels in and tell the bullies to “f*** off!”
We are rapidly developing into a group of pushy and anal individuals who want to make everyone else live by rules that are not of their own design.
It’s time to put the smoking nazis firmly in their place. They may feel free to complain about the real tobacco laden products that they insist poisons their air, but leave the electric cigarettes alone. I mean, what’s next, a ban on nicotine replacement products? I am pretty damned annoyed by this attitude and frustrated by the degree of ignorance exhibited not only by British Rail, but Air France as well. But then, it’s nothing that a major lawsuit can’t fix.
