The 2025 Supernatural Horror A Hard Place is low budget, confusion. As closing credits rolled all I could think was: What in the world? This is almost the worst horror film I’ve ever seen. That is saying a lot folks as I’ve seen a lifetime of these “Drive-In” features.
A Hard Place Story
A group of criminals get mixed up in a war between tree people and Lovecraftian monsters. There is snow, trees and an eclipse involved. Death reigns supreme.
The Cast
Felissa Rose is Henrietta.
Lynn Lowry is Zenia.
Bai Ling is Zuri.
Rachel Amanda Bryant is Fish.
Kevin Caliber is Hurt.
Ashley Undercuffler is Naja.
Jennifer Michelle Stone II is Candy.
Miranda Bourke is Sylvian.
Kudos to Natalia Santacoloma as the girl Josie. The young actor knocks everyone off the screen here in a role that lasted 2 minutes? #nosmallparts
Let’s Talk A Hard Place
Director and Co-writer J. Horton has managed to almost tie 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams as worst horror film. *Horton shares writing credit with Michael J. Epstein.* It could be said that a lot of the problem lay with the uber low budget of $200K. The blame cannot be down to this, however. I have seen lower budgeted films that completely blew me away.
Everything is added into this mess. Like a food processor, they mix it together as a horror porridge. There are glimpses of Twilight, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Tetsuo Iron Man, Evil Dead, et al.
They have thrown a bit of all the low budget films and a few larger budget ones, they like together.
Sadly, they waste the talents of Rose and Lowry. Bai Ling manages to keep her head held high though in her “film in a film” role.
*Fun Fact: I should have worked with the talented Ms Lowry back in 1976. The film, a “B” picture, is Fighting Mad, starring Peter Fonda. The company cut my part because of dwindling funds. I found out years later that we came “this close” to working together. I did get to read for Jonathan Demme, though, an experience I will never forget.*
It Doesn’t Work
The plot is all over the place. A Hard Place starts at a Drive-in. Part of the criminal gang are watching a zombie movie. The rest are robbing the concession stand. They kill everyone over a small briefcase.
Escaping, they end up in snow covered woods. Tree people start attacking them. A group of rescuers arrive and help them get away from the creepy monsters.
Things go downhill from here. The strange, hillbilly saviors turn out to be worse than the tree people. Enter some Lovecraft inspired creatures, that aforementioned eclipse and intimations of breeding the new captives.
What?
A Positive Note
Despite having a such a low budget, they manage to pull off some pretty impressive fight scenes. The practical and VFX are also pretty darn good. Sadly, these two items do not a good film make.
The Verdict
A Hard Place earns slightly more than “Field of Screams,” for the record, they got 0 stars. This effort gets a 2 star rating. They try to overcome their small budget by over stuffing the story. It is all busy-ness and no cohesion. Most of the actors sound like they are reading their lines. Trying to follow the storyline will give the viewer a headache. I wanted to like this one at least a little. It has Rose, Lowry and Ling it it, three of my fave scream queens. Sadly, this fell so far short it hurts. The film is streaming on Prime right now. I urge you, give this one a miss. You can thank me later.
