The 2024 horror offering of The Boogeyman, proves that therapy can be murder. It can also allows the monsters in. This is an adaptation of Stephen King‘s short story of the same name.

The Boogeyman Story

A family is grieving the loss of their mother/wife. The father goes to therapy. Meanwhile, the two daughters have issues of their own. The Boogeyman.

The Cast

Chris Messina is Will Harper.

Vivien Lyra Blair is Sawyer Harper.

David Dastmalchian is Lester Billings.

Madison Hu is Bethany.

This Works

Somewhat incredibly, The Boogeyman works. *King’s short story is indeed short. It has a slap your face twist though that still stings. “It still held its Dr Harper mask in one rotted, spade-claw hand.” *

This is shorthand scary. King is the master, oh yes. But this adaptation, with its trio of writers, does a good job. It takes this very short tale and owns it. Sure, the movie leaves the realms of King’s world, but it is still pretty doggone scary.

Director Rob Savage takes us through the story’s paces. We see the thing, not from the father’s perspective, but through his kids experiences. “Pop”Sawyer is leaving the boogeyman terror in therapy . Meanwhile Sadie is trying to save her little sister from the monster.

If it Bleeds

As Dutch says in The Predator, “If it bleeds, we can kill it.” The boogeyman bleeds all right. It is, however, a hard kill. The Sawyers have their work cut out for them.

They all work hard. It is, as they say, a close call. Will they win?

The Boogeyman Verdict

The Boogeyman earns a solid 4 stars. It may just borrow the concept and the character names from King’s short story. However, it does have a splendid double twist in its tale. The film is streaming on Disney +/Hulu right now. Go check it out. We promise, it will be worth the journey.
