The 2025 Drama/Thriller Clutch disappoints. Writer/Director Michael Merino completely misses the mark with this one. Despite having personal favorite Augie Duke, in a blink and you’ll miss her role, Clutch falls far short. Even Aussie actor Vernon Wells as the “Big Bad” doesn’t help.
The Story
A female “Uber” driver is hijacked by a passenger in a hoodie. He has a bag of stolen loot and is armed to the teeth. Her night shift just got worse.
The Clutch Cast
Sadie Katz is Tonya.
Kaiwi Lyman is Xavier.
Augie Duke is Rally.
Mike Ferguson is Tartalo.
Michael Paré is Marty.
Vernon Wells is Fuentes.
Eva Hamilton is Deah.
Jessica Uberuaga is Butterfly.
Problems
There are a lot of problems with this one. Some are small and almost unnoticeable until you watch it again to work it all out. Tonya, for example, drives a former federal plated vehicle. She is a driver, for an Uber-type company. Her mileage would be rubbish and the car’s drinking gas would cut way back on her paycheck.
Other issues are the confusing nature of Fuentes and his preoccupation with the clicker, and feet. The foot fetish is more easily explained than that darned clicker.
Like everything else in Clutch, there is no rhyme or reason behind many of the things in the film. The plot is a mishmash a complete jumble, of storyline and arc.
It says something when you have to set through the thing twice. Just to figure out who Butterfly is and her part in the whole thing. She works for the bad guy, aka Fuentes, but is a free agent. Apparently.
Clutch takes a long way around the barn to reach its goal of folks shooting at one another.
Tonya, for a former military player, does not even know how to hold a shotgun when firing it. That under the armpit stance is okay if you are right up on top of your target, but…
Shoot em Up
This “thriller” is a down and dirty shoot em up. There is nothing special going on here. The idea of cops stealing from the bad guys is not new. The 2014 Action/Thriller Sabotage based an entire film around dirty cops stealing dirty money.
Clutch takes a long way around the barn to reach its goal of folks shooting at one another.
The Verdict
Clutch earns a shaky 2.5 stars. It only earns that because of the presence of Duke and Wells. This is streaming on Prime as a rental. Save your money and wait for it to stream on the “freebies,” Tubi, Fawesome, et al.
