Taylor Swift released her Blank Space music video on Monday and it is quite simply crazed genius. Funny, tongue in cheek, outlandish, sly, and bloody brilliant. Even without watching the video just listening to the lyrics is enough to place this particular song as one of her cleverest and most entertaining of 2014. “I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream; Screaming, crying, perfect storm.” Sounds like many an exe known by many a man.
It has been a long standing tradition that the only people who think that Country Music Award presenters are funny are the presenters themselves, on ABCs CMA awards, Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley tried to stack the humor deck in their favor by using the most recent Saturday Night Live script for their open. The two performers opened the award show last year and either were popular enough that the show’s organizers wanted them back or the they drew the short straw. There have been some complaints that they took things a bit too far with the not-so-good natured ribbing of Taylor Swift.
On the November 1 Saturday Night Live Chris Rock was bringing the show back to its roots in his opening monologue with edgy humor that used to be the mainstay of any Saturday Night Live broadcast. Relying on comedy that approached the boundaries of poor taste and, according to some, breached them. It has to be admitted that Chris Rock’s humor is not for everyone. Not quite an acquired taste but close, the comedian’s approach to topics of comedy has always been irreverent and “close to the bone.” Having the former cast member back on the show was obviously another move intended as a celebratory move for the SNL 40th anniversary series.
On the BBC One Graham Norton Show it was Taylor Swift versus John Cleese on British television where first Graham and then Cleese poked fun at Taylor’s love of cats. to be fair, Norton took the avenue of foretelling that Swift would one day have 17 cats and stage whispered “Here comes Taylor, crazy cat lady.” The Shake It Off performer replied that would be a few years down the road before that happened. After the joke he then moved on to show a picture of Taylor’s cat to John Cleese and the audience.
While some folks have been complaining that this whole icy bucket challenge is a trend that takes away from the real issue, Taylor Swift proved that wrong by taking the “plunge” for the money. Both she and another of her BFFs, Jaime King, held up wads of 100 dollar bills to show that they were giving a load of dough for the cause.
