So reddit Will Remove any More Articles About Higgs/CERN?

I’ve always kind of liked reddit. It was a good way to drive traffic to your blog site. They usually did a pretty good job and were only ever occasionally matched by StumbleUpon. But this afternoon, reddit released this statement on their r/science page –  Announcement: We’re being flooded with Higgs/CERN submissions. Don’t submit more of them, since at the moment all of them will be removed.

What…the…Fudge?? Okay, I can kind of understand the site crashing from too much input. But to remove content because they are receiving too many submissions sounds a bit funny to me.

Are reddit practising some sort of censorship or are they not happy that so much fuss is being made of the Higgs boson particle. I do know that not everyone is happy about yesterdays turn of events. I’ve gotten two rather boorish comments on my last blog post, which coincidentally dealt with the question of the new particle and religion.

I’ve been blogging for about a year and a half now and this is the first time, I’ve ever gotten any negative comments. To be honest I was prepared for it. There are a lot of people who don’t like you to question religion at all. And the fact that I questioned that very subject in my last blog lead me to believe that at least a few folks would not like it.

But now it appears that apart from the first ‘rush’ of viewings, my link to reddit has been severed. Which I don’t think is fair at all. *I know life isn’t fair, whoo hoo.*

I will give them some credit for at least telling us that they were going to be removing the Higgs/CERN submissions, but not a lot. Obviously somewhere in the ‘reddit HQ’ somebody wasn’t happy about the spiralling coverage the discovery was getting.

It’s not just reddit though. I first saw an article about it this morning on page 5 in one or our daily newspapers. Page 5?? This is the biggest thing since Albert Einstein came up with E=MC2 back in the day! My daughter and I were saying that this whole thing doesn’t appear to be getting much in the way of attention from the media.

Still I thought it interesting enough to blog about and thought someone else might like to hear my musings about the ‘new’ particle.

When I posted my blog about the discovery it started garnering views immediately. It shot up to about one hundred and fifty views and then…just…died. After about an hour, it then got one or two more views. Curious I nipped over to reddit to see if the link I had provided had been that badly voted down.

That was when I discovered their little announcement.

I am a little confused. I thought the whole point of sites like reddit was to allow us to submit links to topical things. And surely it can’t get much more topical than the discovery of the boson particle.

I’m beginning to think that the only topical items reddit is interested in are films, photos of cats and dogs and things that will not clog up their feed.

I guess that will teach me to support, monetarily, a site like reddit in the future. Why wait for the government to censor the net when a site like reddit can do it for them.

WordPress versus Blogger.com

I will openly admit to loving wordpress.

Don’t think that this declaration of love was easily given.  But, dog-gone it, I’m impressed. I have had a blog on wordpress for a fraction of the time I’ve spent on Blogger.com and Tumblr.

In the very short time-span I’ve had three to five times the amount of views per post that I was getting on Blogger. And of coure, Tumblr never shows you how many folks have stopped by.

I will admit that I was a complete ‘noob’ in the world of blog posts and blogging.  But I got stuck in and decided that I did have an opinion about lots of things and I wanted to share it. Not to mention, I like writing almost as much as talking so blogging gave me an outlet.

I wish I had started with wordpress rather than immigrating over from  the other blog sites. But I didn’t know any better! I had no idea that you could put tags and categories to link to your blog post.

I also didn’t realise just how user friendly wordpress is.

In half the time it took me to set up my previous blogging accounts, I had set up a new one in wordpress. They had a huge amount of free and ‘not-free’ templates for your site. You have access to Zemanta which makes finding free images a lot easier and it also gives you links to similar articles for inclusion on your blog.

WordPress also shed a light on Reddit and StumbleUpon, neither of which I had ever heard of before. Both of these sites have increased views to mine and I’m so glad I found them.

So here’s to you wordpress, my little post of appreciation. Have I told you today that I love you?

So Much To Do…So Much Time

Being off work, with a work related injury, has been a small blessing. It has also been a curse and a downright pain in the butt.

It has given me time to reflect, internalise and worry. It has also given me too much time to do too many things.

I have a gross of books that I want to read. I have at least ten (infinitely more if I am brutally honest) films I want to see. I also want to write about all the above mentioned items. I have at least four or more videos I need to make.

I could literally take an entire day to list all the things I should and could do plus all the things I really must do.

Having too much time on your hands can drive you slightly batty. Because you are not getting on with the everyday business of living your life, you spend way too much time thinking about it. *On a side note here, it’s fascinating how my spell check dislikes it when I use bold and italicise on a word in the middle of a sentence.*

I do have doctor’s appointments and exercises to do and I have to keep my boss informed as to my progress in terms of recovery and what the latest prognosis is of my condition. But these things do not take up much time or even effort.

Of course the worst thing about having too much time on your hands is the distractions.

Facebook, Twitter, YouTube (which really is a duel edged sword), Pinterest, Stumbleupon…well you get the idea I am sure.

The biggest distraction of all is the housework. Also known as housekeeping, this mundane and mind numbingly boring task has to be done everyday.  If you don’t keep on top of it, you soon find yourself living in a proverbial pig sty. I am also developing  an almost OCD attitude  in terms of keeping the house clean.

I just glanced out the window and realised that I didn’t even mention the garden!

Oh well, I guess I’d better do something. The trouble is I am kind of spoiled for choice. There are so many things that I could, should and must do that the list is huge.

I’ll just have another coffee and perhaps a cigarette, possibly a real one instead of the electronic one, and ponder a bit more about what to next.
