Heroes Reborn - Season 1

Heroes Reborn: 11:53 to Odessa springs forward to both the post apocalyptic future and to Erica Kravid’s utopian city Gateway. Nathan/Tommy  has replaced Hiro Nakamura as the master of time and space, although Hiro is still around as he is powering the time bridge.

Miko returns to save Tommy and evades Kravid. Afterward Noah is apparently also saved by Tommy, although it is not clear whose time-traveling hand grabbed Bennet and kept him from being smashed flat by a flying car.

The Haitian and Taylor Kravid take on Sunstone Manor and Matt Parkman and the first cracks appear in Phoebe and Quentin’s relationship.  Another “butterfly” appears in that Hachiro Otomo’s real life daughter is not dead but being held by Erica Kravid.  Harris Prime appears to have hundreds of clones of himself and Malina joins up with Luke Collins while believing that her grandfather is dead.

Parkman (Greg Grunberg) turns out to be a nasty bit of work who screams at a  captive Farah Nazan (Nazneen Contractorwhile pointing a gun at Carlos’ head, “This is easy for me.” It appears that Matt is so paranoid that he will get left behind by Kravid that he will do anything to ensure his survival.

Ren Shimosawa (Toru Uchikado) is approached by the “digital” version of Hachiro Otomo (Hiro Kanagawa) and sent to help Miko (Kiki Sukezane) he must travel the time bridge to arrive in the future. Malina stops the mega storm that “kills” Noah and she has to flee the scene with Luke when the normals threatens to kill the powerful evo.

Erica manages to turn Tommy/Nathan to her plan, but Katana Girl rescues the teenager when an overconfident Kravid believes that the boy will follow her lies.  Another interesting twist as Miko saves the master of time (Nathan) and not Hiro, whom she rescued the first time around.

Farah and Carlos escape and meet up with Taylor and all the Hero Truther group have to flee from what looks to be hundreds of Harris Primes. Also fleeing are Luke Collins (Zachary Levi) and Malina (Danika Yarosh) as well as Nathan and Miko, who apparently stop by to save Noah from the car.

Things are confusing by the time the end credits roll. Noah, Nathan and Miko are missing and it appears that Ren will be joining the future world of “Gateway” only to find that Katana Girl is not there.  The Japanese gamer may be the one who frees Hiro, again, and it is not certain just yet were The Haitian fits in the scheme of things although he is part of the Hero Truther group.

A grown up Micah Saunders  (played by the same actor who portrayed Saunders as a child in the first iteration of Tim Kring’s Heroes Noah Gray-Cabey) is approached by Matt and it seems the adult version of Micah is just as  powerful.

This is the mid-season finale, or “fall finale” and with three episodes left in the first season and with no news of NBC approving the show for a second outing, there may be  a lot left to resolve when the series returns in January 2016. With only three more episodes to finish the story, Kring will have to amp up the storytelling and weave the many conflicting threads that bit faster.

As NBC has not been overly supportive of its other new show, The Player (just cancelled) Heroes Reborn may not return to resolve outstanding plot points and grey areas yet to be addressed.

Heroes Reborn: Sundae Bloody Sundae (Review)

Heroes Reborn - Season 1

While the scales may be lifted from Tommy’s eyes in Sundae Bloody Sundae in Heroes Reborn this week, Noah’s butterfly bites him and his grandson in the buttocks with his surprise attack with sister Phoebe. Caspar (Pruitt Taylor Vince) is stopped not once but twice from doing his penny trick and then is killed by the madly murderous Joanne Collins (Judith Shekoni) and Malina (Danika Yarosh) witnesses the whole thing at the back of the ice cream shop.

Luke Collins (Zachary Levibonds with Malina over a sandwich and later he faces off  against his homicidal wife where he tries to save Emily Duval, Tommy’s girlfriend (played by Gatlin Green) and the twin steps in to stop time, saving Emily and Joanne. Grabbing his girl, the boy zaps out of the shop and over to Noah.

Once there, he is met by Quentin Frady (Henry Zebrowski) and his “dark” sister Phoebe (Aisling Paul) where they take Tommy from Bennet.  Carlos Gutierrez (Ryan Guzman) and Dearing (Dylan Bruce) learn the deadly truth about Sunstone Manor and both men meet the director, an incredibly disturbing Matt Parkman, who dispenses punishments to match the two intruders’ “crimes.”

Erica Kravid’s daughter gets one step closer to finding “Hero Truther” and learns that her  mom has Micah Sanders,  the group’s leader. (The cute lad from season one of Heroes is all grown up now and his power has been harnessed by Kravid.)

As butterfly, Quentin Frady has changed from the uber geeky, and socially inept guy that Noah first knew to a pretty together chap who is not very nice at all. He works for Kravid now and Noah has an epiphany when Frady arrives to take his grandson to Erika.

Heroes Reborn - Season 1
Homicidal mom meets ice cream girlfriend…

At Sunstone Manor it is revealed how the director keeps the evos there, they really do not want to leave as Parkman (Greg Grunberg) shows each “inmate” what they want to see. For Carlos’ nephew, it is the real El Vengador (his father) who tells the boy that they will fight crime together.

Gutierrez is put back into the “lie” where Farah Nazan played hero and laid the label on Carlos to hide her abilities.  The man is left in battle cringing and crying on the floor while phantoms fight all around him. Parkman nonchalantly eats his peanut butter and jelly sandwich while pondering his discovery in Carlos’ memory of Nazan.

As Tommy sets down to his “last supper” with Erica, the camera fades to black and comes back to focus on a butterfly moving across what looks to be dry lakebed. Miko Otomo, aka Katana Girl from Evernow (Kiki Sukezane) sits in silent contemplation on the same lakebed. The video game heroine opens her eyes from her solitary meditation and sees the butterfly has landed on her hand.

The creature rises into the air and she follows it, the butterfly leads her to discover an encampment in the same dry and arid landscape.  A “9th Wonder” title informs the viewer that this is 7,957 years into the future.  Mohinder Suresh assures the audience that destiny remains as Miko looks back over her shoulder into the camera.

This episode show just how much of a “company man” Matt Parkman really is and the teaser for next week’s mid season finale makes it seem that Noah Bennet’s days are numbered.  Heroes Reborn continues to twist and turn and every time it seems to be very clear who the “big bad” is, another variable is dropped into the mix.

Heroes Reborn: June 13th Part 2 – Biggest Butterfly (Review)

Heroes Reborn - Season 1

In the second half of the Heroes Reborn two-parter; June 13th Part 2, we finally get the back stories on a number of things. Such as why Tommy has no idea who his “father” is.  There are other things that come full circle and Noah Bennet, with his attempted murder of Erica Kravid, steps on the “biggest butterfly” and this will bite him in the butt “back in the future” where a live Quentin Frady awaits.

It is revealed that Nathan shares more than his uncle’s name, he absorbs the power of evos he comes in contact with, first absorbing mom Claire’s ability to self heal and then Hiro’s time travel and transportation skills.  We witness the “birth” of Miko Otomo, aka Katana Girl, and the apparent death of her “father.”

We also see the moment that Joanne Collins becomes a homicidal maniac, when the freeze evo comes to thank Luke for saving his life at the Odessa bomb site. After attacking the man, who flings her off in self defense, she comes back with some scissors and stabs the evo to death.

Despite best attempts by Hiro, “future” Noah and Angela Petrelli the twins are now in jeopardy because of Bennet’s impulsive assassination attempt on Kravid.  As his past self tells him, he stepped on the biggest butterfly. The ramifications are pretty wide reaching, for example in the future, Phoebe does not kill her brother who is working for Erica. Leaving him to betray Noah by passing on the information about Claire’s twins.

This two parter finishes with enough twists and turns to make the viewer dizzy trying to track each new and old storyline.  On one hand, it was pretty cool to see a Tommy who knew who he was, who his father was,  and could speak fluent Japanese, on the other, it was sad to see what looked like the imminent death of Hiro Nakamura and his betrayer Hachrio Otomo.

It was nice to see the return of Katana Girl and to learn more about Malina’s mentor and bodyguard Farah Nazan, the same woman who pins the label of hero onto Carlos Gutierrez. This action makes Carlos into the hero he later becomes as Farah tells him:

“If you’re uncomfortable with an honor you don’t deserve… live up to it.”

The “war hero” does just that and later tries to save his nephew and the priest as well as stepping in for the real El Vengador.

As Hiro says to Noah, one of them at least, Claire’s father stepped on a huge butterfly.  Tim Kring has woven all the story threads together for an intricate spiderweb of time and destinies. More old faces return, even as more leave, Suresh’s death proceeded the return of Matt Parkman who works for the “dark side.”

Heroes Reborn - Season 1
What will happen to Malina’s powers when she and Nathan meet?

Collins’ backstory, the death of Dennis and Joanne’s murder of the “ice” evo was shocking and revealed so much about the couple.

A real stand out moment was Otomo’s creation of Miko from the game Evernow.  Which brings us back to the question of just where Hiro is in the present and what will happen when his  “son” who has taken Nakamura’s power meets back up with his twin sister.

This was a real mind boggling episode and fans of the series will be wondering just what will happen now that the Quentin Frady “butterfly” has become a minion of Erica Kravid.

Heroes Reborn - Season 1
Hiro with Baby Nathan…

Heroes Reborn airs Thursdays on NBC and continues to weave those storylines. Tune in and see just how much Noah’s butterfly will change the verse and whether Hiro survives his fight with the three Harris Primes…
