The only trouble with being the world’s most desired BFF is that there is always someone who cannot wait to pull you down, in this case Jennifer Lawrence and her “rape scream” at Cannes has caused upset with some female journos. The same reporters who have been gushing over the Hunger Games star are now ready to vilify her for an “off the cuff” remark made at the same party where she met Justin Bieber.
Ryan Gosling hit Cannes with his directorial debut film Lost River and it was almost universally panned by critics with only the odd one or two liking the look of the movie. Despite the fact that Gosling’s first time in the big chair did earn him a five minute standing ovation after its screening, those professional naysayers, the critics, gave the effort an overall thumbs down.
Certainly Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger brought Cannes to a standstill earlier today when they rode down the Croisette on a tank with their co-stars and one of these, Ronda Rousey, explained why the two older action heros are so popular, she says they are real men. Or at least what should be seen as real men as opposed to anorexic younger males who wear women’s skinny jeans whilst texting on their cell phones.
America Ferrera was accosted on the red carpet at Cannes as she stood with her How to Train Your Dragon 2 co-stars by a man who lifted her dress and tried to shove his head under it looking, perhaps, for Ugly Betty. America was standing next to the newest addition to the cast, Cate Blanchett along with other members of the animated feature’s players.
Only God Forgives, Ryan Gosling’s second film with Nicolas Winding Refn can be best described as an intimate Opera. Set in the seedy underworld of Bangkok; drug smuggling and kickboxing are the backdrop to this dark tale. There is also a strong Oedipal theme in this mind bending psychological and disturbing film.
