If nothing else, Scream Queens manages to pull some pretty obscure ailments out of its bag this season. Wes Gardiner’s issue is Trichophagia, which means quite literally, eating human hair. As ZayDay says at the start of the episode, this “disease” would make anyone gag, including the individual devouring the stuff en masse.
At the start of “Rapunzel, Rapunzel” ZayDay’s word of the day is “gag.” She uses it repeatedly whilst acting so over-the-top happy that the chances of her being the next Green Meanie victim seems to be fait accompli.
While this may be the single most disgusting thing on the show this season (and yes it trumps the “boil” covered boyfriend of Chanel #5; blecch…) the episode does trot out a third Green Meanie. Wes reveals, throughout the show, that daughter Grace (played by Skyler Samuels in season one) is not at university at all, she is in a mental asylum.
He also reveals that he is the third person to wear the costume, mainly by skewering Chamberlain while confessing he is now after the Chanel’s. Meanwhile, ZayDay has been doing her impression of Nancy Drew and hunting down that piece of fabric that she and Chamberlain collected from the Green Meanie.
(Sidenote: Kudos to horror actor Bill Oberst Jr. for nailing it in his cameo as the fabric expert who made three of the Green Meanie outfits.)
ZayDay confronts Jane Hollis who makes the girl a cup of tea. Clearly the young woman’s biorhythms are completely off as she drinks the drugged beverage and wakes up in a very precarious position. Williams may well join her “crush” Chamberlain as the next victim of “one of” the Green Meanie.
Comedy-wise, this episode features a brilliant scene where Hester helps Chanel Oberlin to understand Brock Holt’s generation. The fact that they miss Holt’s age group by decades is hysterically funny. (Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy anyone?)
The highlight of that particular bit had to be Chanel #5 with her Shirley Temple impression, with her giant lollipop, golden tresses and looking for all the world like she is 12. Her final line, “When I grow up I’m going to work in politics as a congresswoman,” was perfect.
Wes is now sharing Dean Cathy Munsch’s bed with Brock Holt, who suggested a very long affair with his boss while maintaining his relationship with the pretty but completely vapid Chanel Oberlin.
The sex scene with Oberlin was truly funny. Brock envisioning Cathy Munsch’s face was spot on. Very little is seen this week of Cassidy, Hollis’ swamp daddy son and Chanel #3. Hester’s role this week was limited to helping out Oberlin and dressing up like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.
(Lea Michele comes a close second to Breslin’s Temple, although Abigail manages to pull off the “little kid” look almost effortlessly with that big grin. Michele, while looking the part, has the most impish look on her Judy Garland face…)
By the end of the episode, Brock is having sex with Cathy, Chamberlain looks quite dead and ZayDay looks to be the next casualty in the C.U.R.E. murders.
