Duck Dynasty: Reality TV is not Real

Duck Dynasty: Reality TV is not Real

Every so often the general public have to come to grips with the fact that “reality” TV shows likeDuck Dynasty are not real. Reality television, by the very nature of the medium that broadcasts it, is not real. Despite networks, studios and producers attempting to repeatedly convince the audience that their real programs feature “real” people and their “real” problems nothing could be further from the truth.

  1. I would dare say that at least 80% of so-called Reality shows are contrived. Most of them have artificial conflicts built into their format to generate ‘Entertainment’. That tuna fishing show is a good example, In the one recent episode I watched, 3 of the 4 crews profiled were fighting amongst themselves. I can tell you if you are out on the ocean – and depending upon each other for livelihood and safety, etc.the last thing you can afford is contention of any magnitude. It’s just unworkable and unsafe. But this is supposed to be ‘Real’. Many of the other shows have similar crap.Undercover Boss is another phony show. Do you think ANY company is going to permit someone to just come in and interview anybody they want to? – and put it on TV?? All of the employees selected are hand picked by the company.
There are a couple of shows that are OK – like American Restoration. That’s about it.

    1. I religiously avoid “reality” television. Big Brother and the like have created celebrities out of people who have not really done anything but allow themselves to be exploited for the audience’s enjoyment. I agree with your summation, although, I would have made the percentage much higher! 🙂

  2. I totally agree Mike. I learnt in Media Studies A Level, that no reality TV can ever be reality because it always shows it from the angle of the cameras etc. In reality, no reality shows are that.
