The Vesatile Blogger and Blog of the Year 2012, Merry Christmas to Me!

I awoke this morning to find that I had been “blessed” twice by other bloggers. Firstly Kim over at Tranquil Dreams has given me The Versatile Blogger (Which I, of course, accepted. One can never get too many awards!) Then I found that Marilyn over at Serendipity put me up for the Blog of the Year 2012…again. *That gives me a 3rd star for my Blog of the Year award!*

Although to be honest I wasn’t really expecting to be here since so many folks seemed to give so much credence to the Mayan “prophesy” about the world’s demise yesterday. I guess I should have said I was triply blessed! But to get to the point, I owe a huge thank you to both ladies for thinking of me. I will be doing an extra blog-post to talk about the Blog of the Year 2012 3rd star shortly.

So thank you Kim for giving me this award. Of course like every other award in the blogging verse there is a “penalty” to be paid for accepting. I am kidding, honest! I don’t see these “rules” as a penalty; they are just part of a tradition that requires the recipient of the award to pass the favour on. In other words you’re meant to share the wealth. It is a great way to show folks that follow you (and that you follow) that you care.

I am not the greatest at reading the blogs I follow, I will admit that right up front (although I do try) I do not stop by as often as I should and like or comment on blogs. There! I said it; I feel much better now. I guess confession is good for you.

The rules for accepting are as follows:

  •  Display the award certificate on your website.
  • Announce your win with a post and include a link to whoever presented your award.
  • Present 15 awards to deserving bloggers.
  • Create a post linking to them and drop them a comment to tip them off.
  • Post 7 interesting facts about yourself.

The first two requirements have been done and the next one (which is the hardest) is what I’ll do now.

My nominees for The Versatile Blogger Award are (drum roll, please):

The above blogs are by no means complete. In fact the first one up is a clear case of nepotism in that my daughter Meg writes the blog. She has written several blog posts under “Much Ado About” on Tumblr and damn it she is versatile. So are the other folks that I’ve nominated. They are pretty much chosen in a random manner. Of course there are a few who are special (and you know who you are) that I would have picked anyway. I do apologise to all the other worthy folks who I did not pick.

Now for the last bit; the “seven interesting facts about yourself” and previously not known facts as well. So without further ado, here they are:

  1. I once climbed Mount Snowdon but had to stop just before the top due to bad weather.
  2. I don’t like pain.
  3. I used to write short stories and once wrote an entire 3 act play.
  4. The above mentioned pieces of literature have never been published.
  5. I used to write articles for the “base” newspaper when I was in the Air Force.
  6. I’ve done radio commercials and presented the odd radio program.
  7. The first radio commercial I ever recorded was when I was seventeen.

I will finish by thanking Kim and very shortly I will be notifying the folks I nominated for this award. I will now (since I finally figured out how to do it) put The Versatile Blogger Award on my blog wall. So thanks Kim!

  1. I wouldn’t worry too much, if you are like me, you’re so damned busy with everything else, the blog verse has to take second place! LOL 🙂

  2. Thanks for the nomination, Mike! Hope you have had an awesome Christmas.

  3. Thanks again, Mike. You can never have too many blog awards! Cheers – and have a wonderful Christmas!

  4. Thanks mate!! The stars equal the amount of times you are nominated. I think it’s a great touch. Oh! I almost forgot. Have a Merry Christmas!!

  5. I, of course, will be taking my pick (I especially like the “Don’t do a damn thing[sic]” award, that did make me laugh! Thanks Marilyn for thinking of me in your “award-bash” and I will be responding very soon. In the meantime, Merry Christmas to you and Garry and all your combined clan! Cheers mate!!

  6. You’re lucky you caught it! Turner Classic Movies only showed it on the 16th and 22nd of this year. I do know that it was aired once with out commercial breaks on December 28 1964. It was so preachy because (surprise surprise) it was penned by good old Rod Serling. Rod could be a bit mawkish and maudlin and definitely overly sentimental for all his genius. If you follow the link (sounds like a line from the film Matrix, “Follow the white rabbit”) it gives a bit more info on the film. It will be interesting to see if Turner Film re-show it next year. I have never seen it but would have liked the chance! Merry Christmas Garry!!

  7. Congrats! You deserve every award you receive, Mike. Question: so what do the stars on the blog of the year award represent?

  8. I know this is not directly relevant but wanted to get my thoughts in before they evaporate through my 70 year old brain. I just stumbled across “Carol For Another Christmas” on the Turner Classics Movies (TCM) Channel..It’s a 1964 update of “A Christmas Carol”. This is a very preachy 60’s look at our Cold War world. Hadn’t seen it before so I stuck with it all the way through. Interesting cast includes Peter Sellers, Sterling Hayden (months before they began shooting “Dr. Strangelove”), Britt Ekland, Robert Shaw, Ben Gazzara, Steve Lawrence, and Percy Rodriguez among others. Anyone familiar with this film??

  9. Bet you thought you were done with this stuff. Well, as it turns out, Santa has way too many awards, so he’s dropping a bunch of them for you to do with as you choose. There are some real goodies in there, including another star for the Blog of the Year 2012, and 4 or 5 others. Take’em all, take your pick, enjoy. It’s Christmas, almost!

  10. Very nice, and thanks for the nomination. Like you, I’d have to fall back on Meg’s work if I were to offer my nominee for the award. Her influence has done more to get me into the blogosphere than anyone else so far. Not to turn the attention away from you, of course. You’ve been far more prolific and offered me a ton of great reading. That’s one good thing about your recent health crisis: it has led to a great outpouring of wonderful material.

  11. Not meant to overwhelm! Honest!! I hope your Christmas is full of smooth running enjoyment! I don’t envy you to book reading, there’s nothing worse than reading books you really don’t want to. 😀

  12. Dear dear Mike. I am sometimes tempted to just give out awards to the same list of people regardless since they are the people I read or at least scan for interesting stuff on a regular basis. There’s not enough time in a day to write ones own stuff and read more than half a dozen other blogs … and this time of year, finding time to get to the bathroom is hard neough. Geez.

I may wait till after New Year’s to deal with this award. I have gifts to wrap, meals to plan and two, long, unpleasant books (I’ve been avoiding these two, but now the time has come) to read. This is the least fun I’ve had on Christmas EVER. Have to do something about this next year. Total overload isn’t working for me anymore. I’m getting too old for this!

Thank you again … I’m trying to figure out if it’s Kosher to just give it back to you, but I guess that’s cheating or something. Hmmm.
